On April 12, 2025, the Association of Nepalis in Minnesota (ANMN) hosted a landmark celebration-Nepali New Year 2082-at the St. Paul Student Center, University of Minnesota. This event, officially recognized by Governor Tim Walz, who proclaimed April 12, 2025, as Nepali New Year in Minnesota, marked a significant milestone for the Nepali community and its growing influence in the region[2][1]. Hundreds gathered- families, friends, government officials, sponsors, and youth volunteers- for an evening filled with tradition, innovation, and heartfelt connection.
Rekindling Friendships, Building New Bonds
The New Year celebration served as a joyful reunion, bringing together longtime community members and their children. For many young attendees, it was their first opportunity to experience Nepali culture on such a grand scale, fostering a sense of belonging and pride in their heritage. Parents introduced their kids to the warmth of Nepali brotherhood and sisterhood, reinforcing the importance of community in an ever-changing world.
A Mission of Culture, Unity, and Purpose
More than a festive gathering, the event was a vibrant showcase of Nepali culture, food, dress, values, and hospitality. Local businesses specializing in ethnic cuisine were highlighted, offering authentic flavors and supporting the community’s entrepreneurial spirit. Non-Nepali friends and leaders from other Asian communities were welcomed, providing them a unique window into Nepal’s rich traditions and fostering cross-cultural understanding.

University and high school students took the stage as Masters of Ceremony (MCs), children proudly sang the national anthem and displayed flags, and many volunteered behind the scenes. Showcasing Heritage Through Symbols and Traditions
The event was rich with symbolism. The Khada, a ceremonial scarf symbolizing honor and respect, and the Nepali topi, a hat representing national pride and identity, were proudly displayed and explained to all attendees. The sacred Pancha Kanya ritual, honoring five young girls as symbols of purity and hospitality-reminded everyone of Nepal’s deep-rooted values and the importance of welcoming guests with an open heart.
