Candlelight Vigil in St. Paul Honors Fallen of Nepal’s Gen-Z Movement
St. Paul, MN — September 10, 2025
In a solemn and powerful gathering at the Minnesota State Capitol, the Association of Nepalis in Minnesota (ANMN), with support from the Bhutanese Community Organization of Minnesota (BCOM), hosted a candlelight vigil to honor those who lost their lives in Nepal’s Gen-Z movement. The youth-led uprising, which called for transparency, good governance, and an end to corruption, nepotism, and favoritism, has shaken the nation and its diaspora communities worldwide.
More than 200 attendees—including Nepali and Bhutanese individuals of Nepali origin, their families, and friends—came together to mourn, reflect, and express solidarity. The vigil featured heartfelt speeches, moments of silence, and a shared commitment to peace and justice.
President Bijay Shrestha, and Treasurer Bhaskar Tripathy of ANMN and Co-chair Rupa Adhikari of BCOM, voiced deep concern over the escalating crisis in Nepal, including the tragic loss of life and destruction of public and private property. They urged unity among Nepalis during this critical time and reaffirmed their support for the movement’s core demands. Similarly, Pema and Tashi from the Tibetan community offered their heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen and expressed strong support for the Nepali community during this difficult time..
Ms. Sia Her, Director of the Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans, addressed the gathering, acknowledging the pain and resilience of the Nepali community and emphasizing the importance of civic engagement and global solidarity.
The event also featured moving remarks from young Gen-Z speakers, who echoed the sentiments of their peers in Nepal—calling for accountability, reform, and a future built on justice and inclusion.
As candles flickered against the evening sky, the vigil served not only as a tribute to the fallen but also as a beacon of hope and collective resolve. The Nepali diaspora in Minnesota stands united in grief, solidarity, and the unwavering belief that Nepal can rise stronger from this moment of crisis.
